After an auction, I had around sixty e-readers to sell.

After an auction, I had around sixty e-readers at home that I wanted to sell. They were gone in about a month and a half. That was great, but it also meant packing sixty parcels and sorting out sixty shipping labels.

That is why I bought a Zebra ZD220. Not some cheap little printer, but a solid machine I expected to use for years. I connected it to my Mac, sent it a PDF and got a faint, greyish label back.

The printer could do better, but something was missing. I could not get it right with the existing software either. So I started looking into where the quality was getting lost and how the computer could send the label straight to the printer. With help from AI, I started building LumenLabel. It became a really fun problem to work through.

You can simply open a design again later.

Once you have made a design, you will often want to use it again. That is why LumenLabel lets you save a design as an .lld or .lldx file. That makes the label design much easier to share and edit.

Print job

I started with the printers.

The first two versions of LumenLabel could print and looked functional enough. But after a few weeks, the software fell apart. Every feature took a lot of work to change, and something else would break while printing. As a vibe coder, I could not do much with it anymore.

So for version three, I went back to the foundations: first make sure LumenLabel could reliably recognise and test supported printers, then rebuild the rest of the app. I kept building on that foundation.

Then I wanted to see what actually came out.

A message saying the print job had been sent without errors was not enough for me. I want to be able to hold the label. Is the black really black? Is everything in the right place? Is it facing the right way, and has anything been cut off? I ran tests on ten different kinds of printers, old and new, with a pile of test labels and my tape measure.

After an auction, I had around sixty e-readers at home that I wanted to sell. That also meant packing sixty parcels and sorting out sixty shipping labels. So I bought a Zebra ZD220. On my Mac, though, a sharp PDF came out as a faint, greyish label.

I wanted to know where that quality was getting lost and how I could use the printer properly on my Mac. At first, all I wanted was to crop, rotate and properly print shipping labels. Later, designing my own labels and using data from Excel became part of it too.

You can save those designs as .lld files on your computer. An .lldx file also stores which parts of the label are linked to which columns in your spreadsheet. That way, you can pick up where you left off without rebuilding the same label.

There are now ten different printers here for testing LumenLabel properly. I do not just check whether the computer says the job was sent. I want to hold the label and see that it is right. For the person using it, that should eventually feel completely ordinary: plug it in, print, done.

Three ways to start a label

Design a label yourself, use data from a spreadsheet or prepare shipping labels from PDF files. You can open and edit all of them again later.Design one yourself, use a spreadsheet or prepare a shipping PDF.

  • ▸Design and save your own labels. Make a label with text, images, dates, shapes, barcodes, QR codes and icons. Save it as an .lld file and open it again later to make a change or print another copy.
  • ▸A separate label for every row. Link parts of your label to columns in Excel or CSV. An .lldx file saves the design, those links and the location of the spreadsheet, so you do not have to rebuild the label when the data changes.
  • ▸Process several shipping labels in one go. Open several PDF files, crop the labels, rotate them and choose which ones to print. You do not have to repeat the same steps for every shipping label.

To your own printer

Select your printer in LumenLabel and print over USB, Bluetooth or your local network. The available connection depends on the model.Select your printer and one of the connections available for that model.

  • ▸USB, Bluetooth or network. Depending on the model, you can use USB, Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • ▸See what the printer will receive. The 1-bit preview shows, at the selected printer resolution, which dots will be printed black.
  • ▸Support per model and connection. Support differs by model and connection. During the trial, you can use your own printer, cable and label roll.

On your own computer

Your designs, spreadsheets and shipping labels do not need to go to a LumenLabel server while you work. Printing does not need the cloud either.Designing and printing happen on your own computer.

  • ▸Your label data stays with you. Names, addresses, order numbers and other data stay on your computer while you design and print.
  • ▸Keep working without the internet. Once LumenLabel is activated, you can design and print labels without internet access. It does need a connection from time to time for licence checks.
  • ▸No monthly subscription. After the trial, you buy LumenLabel once. The final policy for future major updates will be set separately.
